What Is the Meaning of Telepathy?

The meaning of telepathy is surprisingly simple: the supposed communication of thoughts or information directly from one mind to another, without using our known senses.

No talking. No texting. No frantic waving across the room.

Just mind to mind.

Telepathy hasn’t been scientifically established as a human ability, but researchers have been trying to test the possibility for decades.

And some of the results are certainly intriguing.

Can You Hear Me Thinking?

One of the best-known approaches is the Ganzfeld experiment.

Typically, one person, the “sender,” concentrates on a randomly selected image or video while another person, the “receiver,” sits separately under conditions designed to reduce ordinary sensory distractions. Afterward, the receiver attempts to identify the target from several possibilities.

With four possible targets, random guessing should produce a success rate of around 25%. Reviews of Ganzfeld studies have reported results above chance, although the meaning of those results remains controversial. A major meta-analysis covering experiments from 1974 to 2020 reported a small overall anomalous effect and recommended more preregistered research.

So, proof of telepathy?

No.

Absolutely.

The Mysterious Telephone Call

Here’s where things become particularly interesting.

Researchers have even studied that familiar experience of knowing who’s about to call.

In telephone telepathy experiments, participants had several possible callers. One was selected randomly, and the participant had to identify who was calling before answering the telephone.

A recent meta-analysis brought together 26 experiments published between 2003 and 2024 and reported overall results above the 25% chance level. Intriguingly, the researchers also reported better results when caller and participant shared an emotional bond.

Again, that doesn’t settle the question of telepathy. But it does make the phenomenon rather difficult to dismiss with a casual shrug.

Are We More Connected Than We Think?

Perhaps there’s a perfectly ordinary explanation for many apparent telepathic experiences.

We know the people closest to us incredibly well. We recognize patterns, habits, routines, and subtle clues without consciously realizing it.

Coincidences happen too.

But perhaps we shouldn’t close the door completely.

Every day, invisible information passes through the space around us. Radio signals, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile communications surround us, despite being completely undetectable to our ordinary senses.

That certainly doesn’t prove that human brains communicate in the same way.

It simply reminds us of something important.

Invisible doesn’t necessarily mean nonexistent.

Maybe one day we’ll discover that those strange moments when two people seem connected are entirely explainable.

Or perhaps we’ll discover something much more extraordinary.
