Reincarnation: Could You Have Lived Before?

Spread the love

Reincarnation..

Imagine your three-year-old suddenly telling you about the family they had before you.

reincarnation, past lives

Another house.

Another mother.

Perhaps even another name.

You’d probably smile, assume they’d invented an imaginary world, and carry on making breakfast.

But what if they started describing people and places that actually existed?

That’s where the mystery of reincarnation becomes considerably more interesting.

What Is Reincarnation?

The basic definition of reincarnation is the belief that, after death, some aspect of a person is reborn into another physical life.

Belief in reincarnation has existed for thousands of years and features prominently in several religious and philosophical traditions.

But you don’t need to believe in reincarnation to become fascinated by some of the reported cases involving past lives.

Researchers at the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies have collected more than 2,500 cases involving children who reported apparent memories of previous lives. The children typically begin talking about them between the ages of two and five, with the memories often fading by around seven.

And some accounts are decidedly peculiar.

The Children Who Remember

One American boy studied by researchers began having recurring nightmares at around two years old about a plane crash.

He subsequently gave details that researchers said corresponded with a World War II pilot who had been killed, including where the aircraft was shot down, the aircraft carrier involved, and the name of another pilot aboard the ship.

Then there’s Sam.

Sam was born approximately eighteen months after his paternal grandfather died. While his father was changing his diaper one day, the boy reportedly announced that when he was his father’s age, he used to change his father’s diapers.

Sam later claimed he had been his grandfather and reportedly recalled details about his grandparents’ lives, including his grandmother regularly making milkshakes using a food processor rather than a blender.

Coincidence?

Something overheard and later forgotten?

An extraordinary childhood imagination?

Or a glimpse of something else?

Have you ever experienced something that made you wonder about a past life? Perhaps an unexplained memory, an extraordinary feeling of familiarity, or a place you’ve never visited that somehow felt like home. Tell us about it in the comments below.

Could Past Lives Be Real?

None of these stories automatically proves reincarnation.

Children absorb enormous amounts of information, family stories can be unintentionally reinforced, memories are imperfect, and coincidences happen.

That’s why the research is interesting.

Investigators have attempted to establish what children said, whether their statements correspond with a deceased person, and whether they could have obtained the information normally. Some cases also involve unusual behaviors, phobias, recognition, or birthmarks that researchers have compared with details associated with a deceased individual.

Does that prove we’ve lived past lives?

No.

But perhaps it gives us permission to wonder.

Maybe consciousness begins with the brain and ends when the brain stops.

Maybe these remarkable childhood memories have explanations we simply haven’t uncovered yet.

Or perhaps some part of us continues into the next life

We arrive in this world with a completely blank page.

Perhaps, every once in a while, a child remembers something the rest of us have forgotten.

Maybe birth isn’t always the beginning of our story.

Who knows?
