Guardian Angels..
You’re about to cross the road.

Something makes you stop.
You don’t know why.
A second later, a car races through the space where you would have been standing.
Or perhaps you’re driving home when an inexplicable feeling tells you to slow down. You do, and moments later you discover an accident, an animal, or an obstruction around the next bend.
Nothing shouted.
Nobody appeared.
You simply knew.
Most of us would call that intuition.
But throughout history, other people have given it another name.
Guardian angels.
What Are Guardian Angels?
Guardian angels are traditionally understood as spiritual beings who watch over, guide, or protect individuals.
The idea appears particularly strongly in Christianity and Judaism, although beliefs involving protective spiritual beings can be found in different forms across many cultures and traditions.
But you don’t necessarily have to believe in angels to become fascinated by the stories.
People have reported inexplicable warnings, sudden changes of mind, mysterious voices, extraordinary coincidences, and even unknown strangers appearing during moments of danger, only to disappear afterward.
Sometimes the timing seems almost impossible.
The Warning That Comes From Nowhere
One particularly intriguing type of experience involves an unexpected inner warning.
Don’t go.
Stop.
Call her.
Turn around.
The person may have no logical reason to obey it, yet something about the feeling seems unusually powerful.
Occasionally, following that impulse apparently prevents an accident or puts somebody in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.
Psychology offers possibilities.
Our brains constantly process information beneath conscious awareness. Perhaps we notice tiny warning signs without realizing it, and the resulting conclusion suddenly arrives as a powerful gut feeling.
That’s entirely plausible.
But then there are the experiences where people insist there were no warning signs.
And those are harder to forget.
Has something ever happened to you that made you wonder whether someone—or something—was looking out for you? Tell us about it in the comments. I’d particularly love to hear your stories on this one.
The Stranger Who Appears at Exactly the Right Time
There is another fascinating category of guardian angel stories.
Someone is lost, frightened, injured, or in danger.
A stranger unexpectedly appears.
They offer directions, assistance, reassurance, or perhaps physical help to the person.
Then, almost as suddenly, they’re gone.
Naturally, the explanation may simply be kindness arriving at precisely the right moment.
And that’s wonderful enough.
But occasionally, the circumstances leave the person involved convinced that something more had happened.
Was the mysterious helper simply another human being?
An extraordinary coincidence?
Divine intervention?
Or, as some believe, a guardian angel temporarily stepping into an ordinary world?
Perhaps We’re Not Always Alone
We can’t prove that an unseen protector intervenes when danger approaches.
And clearly, terrible things happen every day despite our wishes for protection.
But perhaps that’s partly why these extraordinary escapes affect people so deeply.
Something happened at exactly the right moment.
A thought arrived.
A decision changed.
A stranger appeared.
And life continued because of it.
Maybe it was intuition.
Maybe it was coincidence.
Maybe another person simply happened to be there.
Or perhaps, every once in a while, the Universe sends someone to stand beside us when we need them most.
And sometimes, perhaps, we never even know their name.
If you enjoy stories about coincidence, fate, divine timing, synchronicity, and life’s unexplained mysteries, Stories From The Universe by Keith Everett contains 36 uplifting stories that might leave you wondering whether we’re ever quite as alone as we think.
